Stage 2 Rollups

Summary of Proposal

A community hub dedicated to showcase the latest stage 2 rollups infrastructures, with great focus on educational aspects about the relevance of Stage 2 rollups for ecosystem security and end user safety.

We will fill this hub with sessions about the steps covered for a rollups becomes a stage 2 rollups, open for a collaborative approach with other rollups which will include hands on sessions on deploying your own rollups stage 2 infrastructure, while brainstorming ideas on how make other architectures variations (Validiums and Optimiums) also more secure and less prone to lost of funds.

Motivation and Rationale

How would this community hub enhance the attendee experience?

Ethereum’s roadmap has expanded, opening the design space for modular blockchains. The rollup centric roadmap opened the gate for proper blockchain scaling and brought the flexibility to fit different use cases and business models into a single ecosystem.

But we still have to deal with it. The rush on addressing rollups left a gap on security guarantees and the ecosystem must now embrace its further polishing to ensure better infrastructure security pillars for the rollups. Why is that? Because today most of rollups infra presents a series of technical fragilities that can lead to serious financial consequences for projects and end users.

Having said that, a fundamental step in this direction is to ensure rollups fulfill strategic technical requirements which are mainly covered by L2Beat’s stage classification system. So bring to the audience, builders, entrepreneurs, authorities and general public the relevance of such infrastructure readiness an important aspect to prepare better the whole ecosystem to its next stage on adoption

Keep in mind those concepts and the importance of the security guarantees remains mysterious to most users and entrepreneurs. It’s time to educate on their relevance through talks, demos and showcases, illustrating how these new protocols can drive safely to innovation and potentially unlock mass blockchain adoption.

We aim to provide an immersive experience where the audience can be very close to the steps on understanding the security guarantees playing out to keep everyone’s applications safer.

How would this complement the main program that is happening at Devconnect ARG?

While the main program may focus on high-level discussions and theoretical advancements, the community hub bridges the gap by providing a space for practical discussions on the implications of stage 2 rollups, allowing exposure to practical examples and experimentation.

This open and warming welcome hub will bring the public close to the technology, acting to demystify concepts and incentivize builders to choose carefully on their infrastructure choices, especially if their apps aim to have considerable TVL involved. It acts as a ‘sandbox’ where ideas discussed in the main program are brought to life. Together with that we use all the tangible and real use-cases presented to give a much better understanding within the community about how blockchain infrastructure is evolving and unlocking ideas that before was simply impossible to be done in the web3.

Why is this topic significant, and why is a community hub the best format to address it instead of a talk or workshop at the main conference?

Ethereum’s technical roadmap centered on rollups brought us the diversity, versatility and the scalability different applications and use cases needed. But it also brought technical challenges on security guarantees and how rollups ensure the trust minimization on chain deployments, which has profound impact on overall security.

The general public, entrepreneurs and builders must get a better grasp about the relevance and practical impacts of Stage 2 rollups and why that matters. Keeping that as an educational, immersive experience and specially close to the community as a vibrant exchange of info is why having a hub with such a critical topic is so relevant. It’s time to democratize the knowledge on why rollups safety matters.

Implementation

What are the production requirements for your space? In addition to what the Devconnect ARG team can provide, what other equipment do you plan on sourcing for your community hub?

*A small, close-knit area (approx 5x6m) to support different small booths/sections/ and/or tables to accommodate dynamic sessions

  • Flow: Attendees interested in listening to presentations and participating in discussions can head towards the front of the space. The walk-in area is positioned at the entrance for those casually dropping by.
  • Sections: The event space will be divided into 3 main sections to accommodate the variety of activities planned.
    • Presentation & Discussion Zone (Front)
      • Seating: approx 10 chairs arranged in rows.
      • Equipment: A projector/screen for visual presentations, and microphones to allow for easy interaction between speakers and attendees.
    • Demo Stations (Middle)
      • Used to demo potential infrastructure stage 2 in action and what does that means in practical terms
    • Walk-in Area (Entrance)
      • Attendees can drop in at any time, engage with others, and explore ongoing discussions and demos without disrupting scheduled sessions. We can have a collaborative wall where modular protocols can decorate with their stickers/swag.
  • Two 55 inch TV to be used to run the presentations and potentially demos + all connectivity gear + stable internet + audio system for presentation (microphones + soundbox)
  • Tables for support laptops: for the presentations + to host side discussions, power connectivity

Initial planned program:

1 - Practical Under-the-Hood Discussions: Making stage 2 concept simple to the audience and .

  • Including live discussions with several protocols about their plans to reach Stage 2 rollups

2 - Unpacking typical problems of low security rollups: Lets bring tangibility to the conversation and recover all possible issues on security and how that impact end users as well as developers with live examples of situations that happened along ethereum history

3 - Walk-in Discussions: An open forum for people to discuss modularity, its benefits, and risks. Available throughout the event for visitors to walk in, see demos, and engage in discussions.

4 - Live demo on disputes: Lets make rollups disputes visual and explain how they keep users safe.

The program will be covered by a diverse range of protocols and critical stakeholders on the ethereum rollups ecosystem.

Team

Who is the list of dedicated people who will organize and be fully responsible for the Community Hub?

  • Cartesi
    • Carlo Fragni
    • Bruno Maia
  • Facet
    • Tom Lehman
    • Michael Hirsch

Why are they best suited to drive this community hub? What expertise do they offer in this topic?

The listed consortium possesses extensive expertise in organizing events and has deep theoretical and practical knowledge of rollups infrastructure, its implementation. We will leverage our expertise and network to ensure that the right representatives from protocols are invited to showcase their contributions to the ecosystem. We will ensure that their presentations are engaging to serve as key anchors for all subsequent sessions.

How will you ensure that the hub stays free from marketing and avoids promoting specific tokens or projects? How will you guarantee that the project’s interests do not interfere with this requirement?

We will invite a diverse array of infrastructure rollups, including prominent RaaS, ecosystem projects and we will work to ensure the conversation is centered on the relevance and necessity of high security rollups frameworks. From Optimistic to ZK rollups the goal will be to educate and showcase how more secure rollups impact the whole ecosystem.

How are the people driving the Community Hub representative of a community?

It represents a diverse set of protocols eager to demonstrate how our industry can meet the growing demand for real-world applications of blockchain technology beyond finance. We embody the experimental landscape envisioned and enabled by the Ethereum Foundation through its technical roadmap.

Hello @Bruno_Maia and co-organizers,

Thank you for applying to organize a Community Hub for Devconnect ARG! Your proposal has now entered the voting phase.

In the coming days, the Devconnect team will review all submissions and select the ones that best reflect the spirit of the first Ethereum World’s Fair. Selected proposals will be announced during the week of September 8. After that, we’ll move into a collaborative phase to refine each Hub’s concept, programming, and production needs.

We appreciate your contribution to shaping the first Ethereum World’s Fair.

As @Bruno_Maia often says: Decentralization doesn’t matter until it does. I share the view that educating the community to take a look at the fine print of how much they depend on someone else is essential for having a safe and healthy infinite garden.

I think this is a really important topic, and it becomes even more relevant now that we’re slowly (or suddenly) onboarding Wall Street and traditional finance. Educating non-crypto native audiences on the different trust and security assumptions is essential. To do that, we as a community need to get very comfortable navigating and communicating those standards.
