Urbe Campus (Devcon Edition) - Educational bootcamp for web3 developers

Hello there! I’m limone.eth, onchain builder, co-founder of urbe.eth and ETHRome.

I’m here on behalf of the urbe.eth community to introduce the Urbe Campus initiative which we’d love to bring to life at Devcon 7 later this year in Bangkok!

About urbe.eth

urbe.eth is a vibrant community dedicated to demystifying Web3 technologies and bringing together enthusiasts and professionals from various fields including software development, law, business, communication, design, marketing, and management. Our community has already fostered various successful projects, including meetups, workshops, hackathons, and educational programs.

Our Values: urbe.eth was founded to challenge the dominant narratives around cryptocurrency that often focus on financial speculation and gambling. Instead, we highlight the innovative potential of blockchain technology to improve everyday life. Our vision is to build a unified community for Web3 builders in Rome, Italy, and beyond.

About Urbe Campus

Urbe Campus is an innovative educational initiative designed to empower Web3 builders through intensive, hands-on bootcamps led by international experts. These bootcamps are strategically scheduled before major Ethereum hackathons, enabling builders to immediately apply their newly acquired knowledge, making the learning experience more impactful.

Thanks to the ENS DAO Large Grants for Public Goods, urbe.eth has secured funding to organize an Urbe Campus during the Devcon 7 conference, right before the ETHGlobal Bangkok hackathon. This 4-day bootcamp will be focused on equipping participants with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the fast-evolving blockchain space. Every lesson will be curated by urbe.eth builders or experts from the urbe.eth ecosystem, covering crucial and up-to-date Web3 topics from a technical perspective.

Why Urbe Campus?

At urbe.eth, we believe that one of the biggest challenges in the Web3 space is the shortage of skilled developers. Our mission with Urbe Campus, along with other urbe.eth initiatives, is to bring new developers into the Web3 space through high-quality educational activities led by experienced professionals in the field.

Why Devcon?

Participating with an innovative educational format at the most important conference of the year, especially in a Southeast Asian country, is an incredible opportunity to empower more builders worldwide. We believe that each Urbe Campus will serve as a catalyst for innovation, uniting diverse communities, bridging gaps, and breaking down boundaries, all while empowering developers on a global scale.

Our Objectives

  • To provide high-quality, intensive training on Web3 and blockchain technologies, specifically tailored for developers.
  • To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the context of blockchain development.
  • To foster a collaborative learning environment that brings together developers from diverse backgrounds, encouraging innovation and knowledge sharing.
  • To enhance participants’ readiness for subsequent ETHGlobal hackathon and other future blockchain-related events, promoting immediate application of skills learned.

Activities

With Urbe Campus, we aim to offer hands-on workshops every afternoon (from 2pm to 6pm) within the Devcon venue, specifically designed to prepare builders for the upcoming ETHGlobal Hackathon. These workshops will focus on intermediate to advanced topics, with each day dedicated to a specific Devcon track.

We are already in contact with many builders, developers, communities, and founders to involve them in the campus activities, allowing them to share their technical expertise with attendees.

Each afternoon will feature four technical workshops, each consisting of a hands-on, live coding session lasting about an hour. These sessions will also be recorded, so participants can revisit them later at their own pace.

We plan to finalize the campus schedule in the coming weeks, coordinating with all the stakeholders involved as well as aligning with the Devcon schedule and initiatives.

What we need

All funding for the realization of Urbe Campus is fully covered by the ENS Public Goods Large Grant that urbe.eth recently secured (Grant details).

The only support we request from Devcon is assistance with the logistical organization of the Campus.

Specifically, we will need:

  • A dedicated space within the Devcon venue, equipped with AV facilities, seating for up to 50 participants, and high-speed internet access to support interactive sessions and live demonstrations.
  • Technical setups include a projector (or a large monitor), microphones, and speakers to facilitate smooth presentations and ensure high-quality video recordings of all sessions.

Additionally, to engage the urbe.eth experts and speakers, we will request a few tickets (though most of our speakers are likely to already have one). We will also need technical support from our urbe.eth volunteers, who will assist with video recording and the overall organization of the event.

Coordination on the Communication Strategy

Once the room is confirmed by the Devcon team, we will set up a Lu.ma event to manage registrations for the Campus. Following that, we will begin promoting the Campus through various channels. We plan to communicate via X from the urbe.eth account and on Farcaster through both the urbe.eth and personal accounts. Additionally, we will share all activities and announcements on the official urbe.eth Discord, which has over 700 members.

We kindly request the Devcon team to support our communication efforts on X and Farcaster to help expand the reach of the event. Furthermore, we would appreciate it if the event could be highlighted on the Devcon website.

Previous Urbe Campus editions

Over the past year, we have successfully conducted three Urbe Campuses:

  • First edition: Rome, October 2nd-6th, 2023. Held before ETHRome, and backed by TheGraph and Secret Network, and delivered in partnership with BuidlGuidl and Venture Miner (recap tweet);

  • Second edition: Rome, February 12th-18th, 2024. Funded by Arbitrum, and delivered in partership with BuidlGuidl and Venture Miner (report, aftermovie, workshop day1);

  • Third edition: Brussels, during ETHCC week. Featuring a 4-day Urbe Campus powered by Base and supported by XMTP, Dynamic, Talent Protocol, POAP, Onchain Dreamers, Venture Miner, and BuidlGuidl (report, Base workshop, XMTP workshop).
