Devconnect Buenos Aires 2025 Proposal

Proposed location: Buenos Aires

Proposal to Host Devconnect in Buenos Aires

Introduction: Argentina stands at a Schelling point for crypto, builders, and innovation—a historic moment where a vibrant community is driving transformative change through collaboration and knowledge sharing. This dynamic ecosystem, exemplified by the recent Aleph pop-up city in Buenos Aires, has rallied thousands of innovators and entrepreneurs, positioning Argentina as a pivotal player in the global crypto landscape. With over 10% of the population already immersed in the crypto economy and Aleph’s transformative groundwork setting the stage, Buenos Aires is perfectly poised to take this momentum to the global stage.

A Thriving Community: In Argentina, the Ethereum community is not just active—it’s thriving. In recent months, over 2,500 participants from Argentina and across LATAM have united to create a one-month pop-up city and startup innovation hub. This grassroots-driven initiative has sparked the emergence of more than 68 crypto startups and engaged hundreds of additional builders, demonstrating that Argentina is not merely keeping pace with global trends but is actively shaping the future of Ethereum and crypto.

The community’s energy and commitment have even garnered the attention of government officials and leading regulators, with increasing support for crypto as a catalyst for economic innovation. Just last week, the President of the Securities Commission, Roberto Silva, affirmed, “We are 100% in favor of normalizing the technology of the crypto world,” underscoring leading policy makers’ growing recognition of Ethereum and blockchain as foundational technologies for the country’s economic future.

The Pulse of Innovation: Buenos Aires is the beating heart of Argentina’s crypto revolution, but the Crecimiento movement has united people from across the entire country, bringing them together in the city to drive transformative change.

Developers, entrepreneurs, and visionaries in Buenos Aires are spearheading a new wave of blockchain projects with the potential to make a global impact. With over 115,000 software developers, Argentina has long been a cradle for groundbreaking Ethereum projects like OpenZeppelin, Decentraland, Hardhat (Nomic Foundation), POAP, Aligned Layer, and more!

Now, a new generation of initiatives and projects are emerging, eager to connect with the global Ethereum community that Devconnect will attract.

The Crecimiento Factor: Crecimiento is a five month old movement helping transform Argentina into the first crypto nation. Crecimiento has evolved into a powerful force of over 7,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds, united by a common goal: to drive significant financial prosperity for millions through crypto.

With three key objectives—bringing 5 to 10 million people onchain, expanding Argentina’s tech startup ecosystem tenfold, and establishing a stable regulatory framework for startups—Crecimiento is transforming Argentina into a global hub for crypto innovation.

Crecimiento has – in many ways – simply coordinated and amplified Argentina’s momentum by bringing together talent and leaders from across the country to transform Buenos Aires into a central hub of innovation and collaboration during Aleph.

This thriving community, already deeply committed to these ambitious goals, presents Devconnect with a unique opportunity to connect with an ecosystem that is not only growing but also actively reshaping the future of crypto and technology in Argentina.

A Proven Track Record: The Ethereum community in Buenos Aires has been steadily growing since the first ETHGlobal hackathon, held in the city in 2018. This event laid the foundation for what has become a robust network of Ethereum enthusiasts, developers, and entrepreneurs.

Today, the community is a beacon of activity, hosting numerous events, meetups, and educational initiatives that continue to attract and nurture talent. The success of these efforts demonstrates Buenos Aires’ capacity to host an event of Devconnect’s caliber, offering a supportive and engaged environment.

The city’s thriving Ethereum ecosystem is not only a local success story but also a catalyst for broader regional growth, drawing in participants from all over LATAM. This convergence of energy and ideas positions Buenos Aires as an ideal location for Devconnect, where the city’s established infrastructure and its burgeoning crypto community can seamlessly come together to create an unforgettable and impactful event.

The need for Ethereum and crypto: In Argentina, crypto is not just a want—it’s a necessity. The country faces a challenging macroeconomic environment, with inflation reaching a staggering 211.4% by the end of 2023, eroding purchasing power and causing widespread economic instability. Currency depreciation and rising debt have further undermined confidence in the traditional financial system.

In response, more than one-third of Argentines have turned to crypto for everyday transactions, with over 50% of the freelance gig economy relying on it. Argentina ranks 4th globally in crypto adoption, with the highest number of crypto-paid employees in the world.

Under newly elected President Milei, there is strong political support for innovation and startup growth, with initiatives to establish Argentina as a tech hub, attract foreign direct investment, and eliminate ‘legal tender’ laws, enabling freer use of currencies and digital assets. In this environment, crypto is becoming essential for financial stability, economic resilience, and the country’s future growth.

Cultural and Creative Energy: But it’s not just the tech ecosystem that makes Buenos Aires stand out—it’s the city’s unique blend of cultural vibrancy and creative energy. Attendees of Devconnect would find themselves in a city that offers not only cutting-edge discussions but also a rich tapestry of history, art, and resilience. Buenos Aires is a place where ideas can flourish, inspired by the city’s storied past and its dynamic present.

Closing Thoughts: Buenos Aires is not just ready to host Devconnect; it’s the perfect stage for the next leap in Ethereum’s evolution. The city embodies the spirit of Ethereum—innovation, resilience, and an unwavering drive to push boundaries.

By bringing Devconnect to Buenos Aires, you’re tapping into a community that’s already leading the charge in the global blockchain landscape.

Here, Devconnect will become more than just an event—it will be a dynamic hub where groundbreaking ideas emerge, meaningful connections are forged, and the momentum for the future is set in motion. Buenos Aires is where Ethereum’s next big strides are waiting to happen!

Ethereum Community and Impact

  1. What does the Ethereum community look like in this region (e.g., existing large community/ small but growing rapidly, etc.)?

Argentina is home to one of the world’s most vibrant and active Ethereum communities, featuring many local projects and initiatives that have garnered international acclaim. This community is not only large but also exceptionally dynamic, eager to engage with global Ethereum leaders and actively contribute to the broader ecosystem.

Vitalik highlighted the impressive scale and enthusiasm of the Argentine crypto community during one of his many visits to Buenos Aires, stating, “I didn’t expect the size of the Argentine crypto community, the number of projects, and the level of interest—it’s one of the largest I’ve seen anywhere in the world. The people here are intelligent and motivated, and they genuinely understand that this technology can be a solution to various problems.”

Communities and Projects

  • Most significant online communities: Crecimiento, EthereumBA, SeedLatam (former DefiLatam), MEC (Mujeres en Crypto), DeFi Argentina, DeSci Latam, The Red Guild, among others.

    • University hubs: DiTella Blockchain Club, Club Cripto UCEMA, Trama (ITBA).

    • Established argentinian projects: OpenZeppelin, Hardhat (Nomic Foundation), Decentraland, POAP, Balmy (former Mean.finance), Aligned Layer (by Lambda Class), Mimic, Wonderland, Belo, Ripio, Lemon, BuenBit, SenseiNode, Kleros, Democracy Earth / Proof of Humanity, Mountain Protocol (USDM), Num finance, Muun, Beefy Finance, Exactly Protocol, BootNode, Eryx, CoinFabrik, Karpatkey, OpenVino, SimpleFi, Forta, SatoshiTango, and many others up and coming :sparkles:

    • Events: We list here the biggest events that happened in Buenos Aires but there is a never-ending list of crypto-events that happens every year in Argentina and Buenos Aires.

  1. What is the potential of Ethereum to have an impact in that region?

    • “In countries with inflation like Argentina, people really understand how money works. This often creates the best ecosystem for projects to flourish, as people are eager to explore how to avoid the impact of inflation and are open to new ideas”, according to Vitalik.

Ethereum holds significant potential to address some of Argentina’s most pressing socio-economic challenges, particularly in financial inclusion and technological innovation and adoption.

With over 50% of the population living below the poverty line, there’s a critical need for solutions that foster economic opportunity and growth. Ethereum can offer new ways to create value, build resilient financial systems, and drive technological advancement.

    • The Ethereum ecosystem in Latin America is expanding rapidly, with a growing number of startups, developers, and investors eager to drive the industry’s growth by addressing real-world challenges. As Ethereum’s adoption accelerates, Argentina is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Ethereum in Latin America. With +3,000 people participating in local crypto initiatives and several high-profile projects originating from the country, Argentina stands out as a key hub for innovation in the region.

  2. How is hosting Devconnect in that city benefiting the Ethereum ecosystem?

    • At a time when the Ethereum ecosystem is grappling with stagnation and searching for new paths to bolster adoption, Argentina is leading the way with real-world crypto use cases that are actively reshaping the country’s economy. From crypto powering everyday transactions to blockchain solutions addressing inflation and financial instability, Argentina is the living proof that crypto can solve real problems. There’s something undeniably special happening here, and it’s creating the blueprint for the future that the world can’t afford to ignore.
In Buenos Aires, innovation isn’t just an idea; it’s woven into the fabric of everyday life, fueling a collective ambition to lead on the world stage.
The city’s thriving Ethereum ecosystem is not only a local success story. It’s the opportunity for broader regional growth, drawing in participants from all over LATAM.

    • This event will serve as a bridge between the global Ethereum ecosystem and one of its most vibrant communities, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation between international leaders and local builders.

    • Bringing Devconnect to Buenos Aires would allow the Ethereum community to connect with Argentina’s growing community of developers and entrepreneurs, many of whom have made notable contributions to the Ethereum ecosystem. It would also serve as a platform to develop Argentina’s capacity to create even more impactful solutions driven by a deep, firsthand understanding of economic challenges
Devconnect Buenos Aires would strengthen the local Ethereum community and enhance the global ecosystem by spearheading the resurgence of the whole Latin America region.

Concerns and Downsides

Every location comes with its own set of advantages and challenges, and it’s important to weigh both.

What are the possible risks?

  • While Buenos Aires is largely safe, it’s crucial to inform attendees about standard safety precautions, particularly in popular tourist areas.

What could be the downsides?

  • Travel safety might be a concern for some attendees, but these worries can be alleviated with clear communication, guidance, and support from local organizers to ensure a smooth and secure experience.

After Aleph, Ciudad de Crecimiento, it’s now clear to everyone that Buenos Aires IS the capital of crypto.

I live in France, traveled 3 times to BA in 2024 so far (soon 4), will probably move there. I’ve never witnessed such a galvanizing energy among crypto communities before.

Argentina is not just the crypto capital of the region; it’s a place filled with incredible, loving, and welcoming people. The culture here embraces you and makes you feel like you belong from the very first moment.

It’s a place where brilliant people not only build and share but also lead by example.

The best part is that, even for those of us who aren’t Argentine, it’s a no-brainer to build and create here to support them. It becomes a team effort from a region that rises together to make this country the innovation hub of this side of the world.

Aleph, ciudad de crecimiento was just the beginning.

For some reason Buenos Aires has been neglected for quite some time regarding Devconnect’s location. I think it’s about time we bring it home. With Crecimiento and the change of administration there is no better time to do it.

Argentina isn’t just ready to host Devconnect, it’s the perfect and most reasonable choice. Hosting Devconnect in Buenos Aires would not only harness the momentum sparked by Crecimiento (Aleph) but also offer the global Ethereum community a unique chance to connect with one of the most vibrant and dynamic crypto ecosystems. I’m truly excited about the immense potential this city holds, providing the ideal backdrop for new ideas, tangible solutions, and the flourishing of the Latin American Ethereum community

I’ve always loved my city. Its bars and cafes, its music, its neighborhood vibes, its gorgeous buildings, its welcoming and entrepreneurial people.

I’ve always loved my country, though its ups and downs clearly showed a need for tools like crypto and web3 to create better systems and institutions.

After Aleph, I’m particularly bullish about Argentina and crypto, and I can’t think of a better place to hold Devconnect.

It’s not a coincidence that every DJ, digital nomad, and tech enthusiast who visits Argentina falls in love with the culture and the people. This unique energy is matched by a deep well of technical expertise, with projects like OpenZeppelin and Hardhat emerging from here. With the momentum building after the recent government change, Buenos Aires feels like the right place at the right time for DevConnect 2025—a moment where culture, community, and innovation converge. The infrastructure here has already successfully hosted a G20 summit, and the Aleph and Crecimiento crypto movements have proven the immense interest and support for this kind of events in Buenos Aires.

Having organized and collaborated on two of the biggest and most important conferences in Latin America, I can say with confidence that Buenos Aires is more than ready to take this step—it probably always has been. That said, I think we’re currently at our peak, and I don’t see the relevance or interest in this industry fading anytime soon.

I also feel there’s now more openness to engaging with the people who can actually push things forward in our country.

The moment is now

がんばれアルゼンチン!

I pledge to share my experience, provide support, and coordinate collaborations through The Red Guild, while also encouraging more local communities in the infosec industry, like the Ekoparty, to get involved and contribute as much value as possible.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, the crypto capital of the world.

The one place on earth where bottoms-up adoption and top-down support meet. Where millions use crypto everyday to opt out from an economy that has seen 5 different currencies in just over 200 years of history.

Home to some of the best projects and developers in crypto. The city that saw the birth of Open Zeppelin, Decentraland, Harhat, POAP. The city where protocols such as Maker, Synthetix and The Graph were shaped.

Top level infrastructure, amazing venues and, most importantly, incredibly passionate and welcoming people. The streets where Messi is a God and V is treated better than Mick Jagger.

With momentum as high as ever, with over 3000 crypto citizens gathering for a month at Aleph, the pop up city to kickstart Crecimiento, a movement to transform Argentina’s economy with crypto, I really can’t think of a better option for DevConnect.

Argentina is already the crypto capital of the world. Lets make it the first crypto country ever. Let’s make history together.

Not only because Argentina needs Ethereum, but mostly because Ethereum needs Argentina. And Argentina has never been better prepared to support Ethereum’s mission and build a new world.
