SEA Community Hub Proposal: The World of DeSci

SEA Community Hub Proposal: The World of DeSci

Summary:

Name: The World of DeSci - DevCon Southeast Asia
Website: desci.cc (under construction)

The World of DeSci at DevCon Southeast Asia is an initiative aimed at introducing the decentralized science (DeSci) movement to the broader Web3 and Ethereum communities to showcase the potential of Web3 technologies in transforming science into a public good. We aim to gather community leaders and project innovators in DeSci to meet and collaborate with the Devcon community, especially local SEA academics and researchers. This event is a precursor to the dedicated DESCI DAY event also held in Bangkok around the Devcon event. The DESCI DAY event will feature talks, workshops, a hackathon, and networking opportunities to engage developers, scientists, and enthusiasts from around the world.

Caption: During the event DESCI DAY: Buenos Aires 2024, the preproposal (RFC) Pre-Proposal for the Community Hub: World of DeSci at DevCon Southeast Asia, published on June 28 in the forum, was mentioned as a significant step forward for the DeSci movement, highlighting the community’s growing interest in decentralized science.

Motivation and rationale:

The decentralized science movement (DeSci) is still nascent and attracting builders and users to the space is an essential next step to achieving real impact in the fields of science and academia. By hosting a Hub at Devcon, we can expose new talent and existing researchers to the tools and models available in DeSci to improve their own workflows and experience in research. This event at DevCon will be a critical step in positioning DeSci as a key player in reshaping the scientific landscape, and attracting a diverse and global audience to the movement.

Implementation:

To realize this vision, we will secure a dedicated space within the DevCon Southeast Asia venue for The World of DeSci. This space will facilitate:

  • Global DeSci Community Interactions: The Hub is dedicated to fostering interactions between DeSci communities from various regions, including LATAM, Africa, Asia, and more, allowing them to a) share their unique challenges within science and academia, b) explore potential collaborations with existing projects.
  • Education and Exposure: The Hub will facilitate exposure of projects to new eyes, and help builders understand the scope of DeSci, potentially inspiring them to build exciting new usecases outside of the typical DeFi/NFTs/Privacy/DID

Hype Generation for DESCI DAY: We will generate signups and excitement for the DESCI DAY event also in Bangkok during this period

List of equipment needs:

Audio-Visual Equipment: Media team for content production

Workspace Setup: Stage, booths w/ TV screens, chairs, whiteboards, and power outlets Translation Services: Real-time translation services for non-English speaking participants to ensure inclusivity.

Promotional Materials: Banners, flyers, and digital content to promote the event and participating organizations.

Team:

This initiative is organized by the teams from DeSciWorld and DeSci LATAM, who have previously participated in events such as DESCI DAY, The World of DeSci Belgrade, DeSci CC Istanbul, DeSci Builders Day SF, DeSci Summit Denver, among others, to spread DeSci around the world. Despite this, we are open to and welcome collaborations from other communities who share our vision for advancing decentralized science.

Something else!

We aim to create a small section within the event for global DeSci communities such as LATAM, Thailand, Africa, Japan, Korea, China, Rio, etc., to interact with attendees. This space would foster contributor gathering and potential funding for unique scientific initiatives these communities face.

Join our proposal and let’s help DeSci get to DevCon!

desci, decentralized social & onchain gaming or AQ are all great non financial use cases for eth ecosystem to reach the next mass adoption milestone. Love to see this community hub proposal, cannot wait to be there if it works out.

Hey all! Thanks for this. A DeSci Community Hub at Devcon does seem cool.

General Update on the Process

  • The RFP is open until the end of August.
  • Shortly after this (early first week of September), we will share which Community Hub proposals got accepted and will work with those accepted teams to fine-tune the proposals/hubs and how we can best meet their production requirements.

We’ll keep you updated, should we have any more questions!

Thanks!

Huge! :earth_asia: :green_heart:

The Hub will be a huge step for DeSci to bring more builders and fresh eyes to the space. I know that we all want to see more diverse applications for Ethereum and novel demand for blockspace - onchain science can be an inspiring concept for many in the ecosystem to explore.

Brenda with DeSci LATAM and DeSci Argentina, along with us at DeSciWorld, are leading this proposal but important to mention that we will be working alongside the entire DeSci ecosystem to bring a full overview of the space.

We hope to give exposure to as many projects, research fields, tools and ideologies as possible with this Hub in a bid to inspire more contributors.

Furthering this, we will also direct those who are enthusiastic towards the “DeSci Day” preliminarily planned for directly after the Devcon main event, where we will host a full-scale conference with workshops, presentations and demos featuring diverse topics such as:

  • improving academia
  • climate science
  • frontier tech
  • space tech
  • biodiversity
  • conservation
  • AI
  • nanotech
  • biotech
    and much more!

Hey! So, we think having a DeSci Hub at Devcon SEA would be cool. However this proposal as it stands is unlikely to get accepted as it is only being pushing forward by one group that is DeSci World. To be make a strong proposal, we suggest roping in many groups, initiatives, and communities.

Hey! There are definitely more groups pushing this - our community at CryoDAO thinks the proposal is fantastic and we are eager to contribute!

Hi you all!
It is definitely a good proposal, we are willing to support by advising in the hackathon, giving talks and/or workshops.

Everyone, could you also mention which community you represent, so it’s clear there is quite a diverse group supporting?

Great proposal - the team at The SymbionIQ Foundation / SymbionIQ Labs and myself would love to see this approved. The DeSci space is growing, the movement to fight for Longevity and defeat aging is gathering momentum. Let’s give DeSci a bigger voice at DEVCON SEA.

I think that desci is the environment with the most growth prospects in the entire ecosystem. It would be an excellent opportunity to connect blockchain developers and crypto enthusiasts with top-level scientists and engineers. Something that already happened in Aleph, Buenos Aires. And it would be extremely virtuous to replicate on a global stage like devcon.

Will attend if this is part of the agenda :100:
